The history of sarees is as mature as Indian civilization it self. It has evolved into a timeless and priceless garment that accentuates a woman’s feminine features. It is also on the global map thanks to the creative designers and Indian films that feature them constantly.

.Over 5000 years ago also there were many draping styles that dominated society. One can see sculptures and oil paintings of various periods in history that record the changing fashion scenario in the country. Many religious and ceremonial functions show the rich nature of blending color, patterns, and motifs on the garment. The word ‘saree’ originates from the Sanskrit word 'sati' which means a strip of cloth. It later evolved into 'sadi' and now is called 'saree'.

Body hugging sarees worn by temple dancers were famous in south India.   Relief in stones, sculptures in temples, literature all depict the saree as an important female garment. In the Gandharva-Graeco style the drape of the saree is different. The saree remains an unstitched garment for the Hindus even today.

Tailored clothes which made an appearance when Muslims invaded were avoided. Stitched by needles, the garment became impure as revealed by history of saree culture even in medieval India.  When the British entered India, women started to wear petticoats before wrapping the unstitched garment. They also started to wear blouses that covered the upper body. With the coming of European women fashions, the blouse styles changed, chiffon, crepe and softer materials entered the history of sarees.
